How to Achieve your Goals and Dreams Faster

How to Accelerate Your Progress in Life with Wormholes

I just finished reading Benjamin Hardy’s book, Slipstream Time Hacking.

There’s an idea in the book that got me thinking: the idea of wormholes.

Wormholes are (as described in the book, not the concept in physics) unconventional paths that can get us to where we want to go ten times faster.

For example, let’s say you decide to create a blog from scratch.

The typical path is to write numerous blog posts, publish them on your website, share them on social media, and slowly build an audience. It could take years to see the results you want. You could also write a potentially viral article for a larger publication and benefit from their already established readership.

It would likely speed up the process of building your own audience.

I can’t think of anyone who wouldn’t like to achieve their goals ten times faster, and a wormhole would be the quickest way of doing so.

The difficulty, though, is finding those wormholes. Where are they?

Well, I’ve thought about that a lot since reading the book, and in this article, I’ll share five ideas to help us find those unconventional paths that could drastically speed up our progress in life.

1. Have a Stretch Goal

In the book, Benjamin Hardy says that to take advantage of wormholes, we first must have big goals.

He wrote:

“If the goals you are pursuing do not require wormholes, your approach to life is far too small. The highest pursuits available are those that literally require exceptions to the rules because such aims cannot be done conventionally.”

We must have goals so big that they force us to think outside the box.

Productivity coach Sam Laura Brown calls those goals “stretch goals.” They are goals that you don’t expect to achieve but will force you to stretch mentally, emotionally, and, in some cases, physically in the process of pursuing them.

As Norman Vincent Peale said:

“Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.”

A simple way to make a small or medium goal an almost impossible one (a stretch goal) is to shorten the time you give yourself to accomplish it or aim for 10x the results you desire.

For example, if you want to build an email list of 1,000 subscribers interested in your writing within the next five months, you could change your goal into:

  • Having 1,000 email subscribers by the end of next week.
  • Or having 10,000 email subscribers within the next five months.

You want to stretch your goal until it’s big enough that you have no other choice than to think outside the box to achieve it. That’s the first step to finding wormholes.

2, Train Yourself to Think Outside the Box

Creativity is a muscle; the more we use it, the more it grows.

To find a wormhole, we must develop that muscle and train ourselves to think outside the box.

Brainstorming sessions are great for this purpose.

At the top of a sheet of paper, you can write down “How can I gain 1,000 email subscribers by the end of next week?” Then, brainstorm at least twenty ways you could potentially do it.

It’s important not to judge your ideas; bad ideas usually precede good ones.

You can use this technique to help you achieve any goal you have. You could even use it without having a specific goal in mind, just to practice your problem-solving skills. You could ask yourself a question like, “How can we get people to use less plastic?” and brainstorm 20+ ideas to solve that issue.

If you do this exercise daily for a few weeks, you’ll increase your creative abilities and be more easily able to detect wormholes when you need one.

3. Connect with Infinite Intelligence

Many geniuses have claimed that ideas and inspiration are generally not the results of logic and reasoning.

Einstein, for example, said:

“The intellect has little to do on the road to discovery. There comes a leap in consciousness— call it ‘intuition’ or what you will— the solution comes to you, and you don’t know how or why.”

Nikola Tesla also said:

“Instinct is something which transcends knowledge. We have, undoubtedly, certain finer fibers that enable us to perceive truths when logical deduction or any other willful effort of the brain is futile.”

They seem to be referring to “A-ha!” moments: those brilliant insights that sometimes pop into our minds when least expected.

Napoleon Hill wrote about a similar concept in Think and Grow Rich:

“When the plans arrive, they will probably ‘flash’ into your mind through the sixth sense in the form of an inspiration. The inspiration may be considered a direct telegram, or message, from Infinite Intelligence.”

The plan (given by infinite intelligence) could be your wormhole!

The question is: how do we communicate with Infinite Intelligence?

Well, it’s easier than you may think.

First, you must spend some time in silence, if possible, daily. You can call it meditation (or a “silence workshop” if you’re allergic to meditation). To receive insights, we must turn the volume of our mental chatter down.

Some people also receive inspiration through journaling.

You could write a question, like “How can I gain 10,000 email subscribers in the next five months?” at the top of a page and then journal about it for 15 minutes.

Although similar to brainstorming, it’s not exactly the same. When you brainstorm, you use your rational mind to find ideas. The journaling exercise I’m talking about here is more of a channeling session: you channel Infinite Intelligence or, if you prefer, allow your intuition to come through. You must write freely without analyzing the words.

Some people also receive insights while contemplating nature.

I also heard Vishen Lakhiani, the founder of Mindvalley, say on a podcast interview that he got the idea for a new learning management system for their online school during an Ayahuasca ceremony.

4. Take Advantage of the Experience of Others

A well-known but underused method to speed up our progress is to find mentors – people who’ve already done what we want to achieve.

Learning from a mentor’s wins and errors can help you avoid certain mistakes and find shortcuts that will allow you to progress faster.

If you can find a blogger who has made it in the blogging world and convince him to share his secrets with you, you’ll likely build your email list much faster.

It’s not necessarily easy to find a mentor, and you may have to pay for their advice, but the time you’ll save can be invaluable.

John Lee Dumas once said on his podcast, “Entrepreneurs on Fire,” that he hired Shawn Stevenson (the host of “The Model Health Show” podcast) to teach him about healthy living. They went grocery shopping together, and Shawn shared his years of research and experience in the health and wellness field.

This mentorship was a wormhole for John as it would have probably taken months, if not years, to gather all this knowledge on his own.

Mentorship is indeed an efficient way to accelerate our progress toward our goals.

5. Program Your RAS to Work to Your Advantage

The last idea I want to share with you is a tool that increases the likelihood of noticing wormholes.

Benjamin Hardy mentions in Slipstreams Time Hacking that wormholes cross our paths every day. Most often, we don’t notice them.

To increase your awareness of them, you can program the part of your brain that decides what aspects of information in the environment you notice and what remains overlooked: The Reticular Activating System (RAS).

The reticular activating system (RAS) is a network of neurons located in the brain that acts as a filter, selecting what we give attention to and what slips past our conscious awareness.

For example, when you drive to work, you don’t notice every single car on the street, the color of every house’s front door, and every person walking on the sidewalk.

You can’t because your attention is limited.

The question is: What determines what data the RAS notices and what goes unnoticed?

First, it prioritizes everything that concerns your survival and safety.

It also constantly looks for data in your environment that matches and reinforces your dominant thoughts and belief systems.

Here’s an example: let’s say you just bought a red car. During the days and weeks following your purchase, you’ll likely notice every single red car on the street. That’s your RAS in action.

What’s useful to know is that you can intentionally program your RAS to notice more of the opportunities that could help you achieve your goals.

One of the most effective ways to do this is by visualizing yourself having already attained that goal. Ideally, you would do this daily. Don’t just see yourself having reached your goal; feel as if you have.

Which Hack Will You Try?

To summarize, whatever your goal is, there are conventional and unconventional paths to achieving it. The more common route usually takes longer.

If you stretch your goal until it feels almost unattainable, you’re more likely to find a wormhole because you’ll have no other choice than to find creative ways to achieve it.

You can also increase your chance of finding a wormhole by training yourself to think outside the box, spending time in silence every day, learning directly from people who have already achieved what you want, and visualizing your goal being attained.

I hope this was helpful.

I am obsessed with finding wormholes since reading Benjamin Hardy’s book. I already meditate and visualize daily, but I have yet to find a mentor; that’s my next step.
