I know this from experience. It has helped me to love myself, other people, and life in general. Since meditating regularly, I have become more grounded and confident, as well as less judgmental. It also no longer takes me a year to get back on my feet after a breakup.

It can do the same for you and much more.

So, here we go— ten ways meditation will help you step into your greatness and transform your life in less than a year.

Benefit #1: You’ll (Finally) Experience True Inner Peace

Under all your mental agitation, there’s a place that’s always calm, quiet, and peaceful.

Peace is your natural state hidden behind layers and layers of mental “debris”: excessive thinking, worries, anxiety, frustration, and self-doubt.

Meditation offers you a way to tap into that peaceful state on demand.

Think of the ocean on a very stormy day. On the surface, the waves and wind are wild, and the sea doesn’t look peaceful at all.

But if you were to dive deep to the bottom of the sea, you would discover a very calm and still environment. You didn’t try to stop the waves and make the ocean calm; you simply dove deeper until you reached the stillness that’s always there.

The process is the same with meditation: we dive deep within ourselves so we can experience the peace and stillness that are buried under the mental agitation.

Meditation is the way to reach this peaceful place.

Benefit #2: You’ll Step into Your Full Power

Personal power is what gives you the courage to pursue your dreams, live life on your terms, and make the impact you want.

It comes from knowing who you truly are (the fundamental goal of meditation) and living in alignment with your deepest values and desires.

Research also shows that meditation increases self-compassion and self-acceptance, contributing to developing healthy self-confidence and self-love and a greater sense of self-worth.

As a result, you stop defining yourself by what other people think of you and other external factors like your job, relationships, and accomplishments.

You know with conviction that you are infinitely worthy without having to prove anything to anyone.

And then: NOTHING CAN BREAK YOU. That’s true power. 

Benefit #3: You’ll Achieve Real Freedom

Do you really think that you have “free will”?

According to neuroscientists, 95% of what we say and do are conditioned responses based on the programs in our subconscious mind. It means that we live 95% of our lives on autopilot.

I don’t know about you, but that doesn’t sound much like “free will” to me.

But there’s hope!

Meditation increases self-awareness (the opposite of the autopilot mode).

This greater self-awareness will allow you to make conscious choices moment to moment rather than living almost entirely on autopilot and being a puppet of subconscious programming.

Benefit #4: You’ll Raise Your Happiness Set Point

Studies have shown that meditation raises what neuroscientists and psychologists call our “happiness set-point” – our baseline for happiness, which is mainly defined by genetics, social conditioning, and personality traits.

Everyone has a different set point for happiness; some people are basically born happier than others.

This baseline for happiness is said to remain relatively constant throughout our lives.

An incredibly happy moment like getting married can cause a spike upward, and a sad event like losing your job can cause a spike downward. Eventually, we return to our happiness baseline, meaning that life events and circumstances don’t seem to affect our long-term happiness.

However, studies have shown that meditation can raise that baseline for good because it increases activity and gray matter in the part of the brain responsible for your happiness and good moods.

You can become generally happier, and if something “bad” happens to you, you won’t sink as low as you would have in the past.

Benefit #5: You’ll Be Able to Stop Draining Emotions in Their Tracks

Here’s something interesting: studies have shown that the natural lifespan of an emotion is only 90 seconds. After 90 seconds, we need thoughts to keep the emotion rolling.

So, when a painful emotional state like anxiety persists, it’s an indicator that we are stuck in a mental loop that keeps the negative emotion alive.

As I’ve said before, meditation helps to develop greater self-awareness. By becoming more aware of thought patterns, you can more easily interrupt them; and by interrupting the negative loops, you stop fueling negative emotions and feelings such as anxiety, anger, or sadness.

Benefit #6: Keep Your Cool

During meditation, you must be an impartial observer of your experience.

By impartially observing what “is” during meditation, you also learn to dissociate and become less affected by external events outside of meditation.

Because you train your mind to look at situations from a distance, without judging or reacting, you become better at staying calm and keeping your cool when facing difficulties.

The distance created between you (the observer) and what’s being observed acts as a buffer.

This space gives you more control over your emotional responses– you’re less likely to say something or make a decision that you risk regretting afterward. It also allows you to stay calm when facing a difficult situation.

You develop what’s called “equanimity.”

Benefit #7: Get Back on Your Feet Quickly

Humans have a natural tendency to fear change because change implies something unknown.

We don’t feel very comfortable with uncertainty. We prefer when things stay as they are because it makes us feel in control; and for the ego, control equals safety. It’s a survival mechanism.

The issue is that the only constant in life is change. We can’t control everything in our external environment, which is always subject to change.

What we can control, however, is our ability to adapt to change and how quickly we can bounce back on our feet. That’s what we call “resilience.”

Meditation is one of the most effective ways to build resilience as it trains us to look at situations from a distance and with a more open and neutral perspective.

Here is a personal example. I used to take months to recover from a breakup, even when I wanted out of the relationship. I simply had a hard time adapting to change, whether it was losing friendships, moving out, or having no one to talk to when I came home from work. Since I meditate now, I’m a lot more resilient and can adapt and move on much more quickly.

When you are resilient, you are less easily thrown out of balance; life becomes smoother and less like a roller coaster ride.

If you do experience failure – whether it’s in a business project, a relationship, or something else – you’ll be able to get back on your feet and move on more quickly.

Benefit #8: You’ll Enjoy Better Relationships

Meditation helps to build emotional intelligence – the capacity to be aware of, control, and express your emotions in a healthy way. It also increases activity in the brain region responsible for compassion and your sense of connectedness to others.

You’ll have greater empathy, understanding, and compassion for others. People will trust you and feel more comfortable being around you.

Maya Angelou said:

“I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”

When people feel safe in your presence and trust you, they are more likely to open up and share their feelings with you.

If you reciprocate, you’ll build deeper connections with the people around you.

Benefit #9: You’ll Become More Charismatic

Meditation can also make you more charismatic and attractive in the eyes of others.

According to the book, The Charisma Myth, written by Olivia Fox Cabane, the three main determinants of a charismatic personality are presence, power, and warmth.

Meditation helps develop all three.

First, when you meditate, you train yourself to be present. As for warmth, it’s the result of becoming more compassionate and developing empathy. Additionally, power comes from building inner strength, which results from developing resilience, equanimity, and healthy self-confidence.

Whether you are trying to sell a product, ask for a raise, or convince your partner to go camping this summer, charisma is a valuable quality to develop if you want people to be interested in your message.

Benefit #10: You’ll Have More Energy

Overthinking, worrying, and a lack of focus depletes your energy. Perhaps you’ve heard the saying, “where attention goes, energy flows”?

When your attention is scattered, so is your energy. You’re like a strobe light, flashing in all directions. When you’re present, you become like a laser – a powerful, focused beam of light.

Meditation trains your mind to be present and focused.

You’ll also have more energy to go through the day if you meditate, even for just a few minutes daily.

Of course, that’s not all. Studies have also shown that meditation slows down aging, improves sleep, and increases longevity, among many other benefits.

Like Tim Ferriss says:

“It’s a meta-skill that improves everything else.”
