A Little Hack to Boost Your Willpower

How Strong Is Your Willpower? 

If you (like me) tend to lack self-control and self-discipline, there’s a trick that can help you increase your willpower and achieve your most important goals faster. 

It’s powerful stuff, and it’ll only take you about ten minutes.

Future-Self Continuity: The Key to Willpower

The little hack I’m about to share with you is based on a concept called “future-self continuity.”

It refers to the degree to which you perceive your future self as a stranger.

Most of us view our future selves as strangers (whether we realize it or not). And since it’s in human nature to want to satisfy our needs before the needs of a stranger, then it’s understandable that we tend to choose instant gratifications (eating the cake) over long-term benefits (lose 20 pounds).  

Luckily, there’s a cool trick, based on psychology, that can boost your willpower by increasing future-self continuity (make your future self less like a stranger).

It follows two steps. 

Step 1

Take a sheet of paper and imagine that you are your future self writing a letter to your present self. It could be yourself in one year or five years from now, as you wish.

Write down how happy you are (being your future self) to have achieved your goal (losing weight, building a business, saving money, traveling the world, etc.).

Also, and this is important, in the letter, thank your present self for the effort and choices you made that allowed you to reach your goals.

Write your letter and read it often.

Step 2

Supercharge this exercise by adding the following:

Using the voice recorder on your phone, record yourself reading the letter. And listen to the recording as you fall asleep at night or just after you wake up in the morning.

You are more suggestible at these times, meaning that your subconscious mind more easily accepts ideas without questioning them.

This is a very powerful form of autosuggestion.

Here’s why…

If you do that, you’ll trick your subconscious mind into believing that you have already attained your goal. Your fears and limiting beliefs will begin to dissolve, and it’ll become easier to move toward your dreams.

Especially if you have big goals or have difficulty following through, this technique will help you.

And it’ll only take you a few minutes.
