6 Essential Habits for a Hugely Successful Life

What differentiates the people who succeed in getting what they want from those who don’t?

For the past few years, I have been surrounded by a community of entrepreneurs and creators and have noticed the patterns that seem to determine if a person will be successful or not.

When I say “successful,” I am referring to their ability to get the results they are seeking.

By observing those who were successful, it helped me to understand why I wasn’t successful.

And by modeling what they did and developing the habits – or rather, the qualities– of these people, I was able to make reaching my goals happen much quicker than ever before.

And you can do the same.

You just need to know what these essential habits for success are and develop them.

So, what are they?

Success Habit #1: Know What You Want (Clarity)

The first habit is clarity.

Knowing exactly what it is that we want is necessary to succeed.

How can we begin to define the steps we must take to achieve our goals if we don’t have a clear idea of what those goals are?

It sounds like it should be the most obvious thing in the world, but in reality, not many people take the time to sit and write down their goals.

We should be able to explain what we want in one or two clear sentences.

You can use our free personal development plan to help you get crystal clear on what you want in all major areas of your life and define the actions you must take to make it come true as quickly as possible.

Success Habit #2: Have a Plan

Next, we need a step-by-step plan to achieve our goal.

The best way to create a plan is to work backward: start from the end-result (ex: losing 20 pounds) and trace your way back from the finish line to define the actions you must take to achieve that goal:

  •       In the next six months
  •       This month
  •       This week
  •       Tomorrow

That will be your road map for getting to where you want to go.

Sometimes, we don’t know what the steps needed to reach our goals should be.

It’s a good idea in these instances to find role models or mentors, people who have already achieved what we want and learn from them. Having role models and mentors is a sure-fire way to accelerate our progress.

We can find mentors online, through books, courses, or even by contacting someone directly.

Success Habits

Success Habit #3: Take Action

Action is the next habit.

Having a solid plan of action is only useful if we actually act on it.

Spending all our time refining our plan and not taking action is a form of procrastination (guilty!).

Sometimes, we spend a lot of time perfecting our plan to be sure that it won’t fail because we really don’t want to waste our time working on something that could fail, right?

But in reality, we fail by not taking action.

Here’s what helps me: At the beginning of each month, I plan for that month and define my most important tasks and activities that will need to be completed. Every Sunday, I prepare for that week and schedule some of those tasks. Every evening, I define my most important task for the following day.

Doing this helps me stay on track.

Success Habit #4: Stay Focused

The fourth essential habit of successful people is that they stay focused.

The “shiny object syndrome” is real!

You start working on something (a goal, project, idea), and then a new, shiny idea surfaces in your mind, and you get side-tracked. You are not focusing on the primary goal anymore.

Sometimes, you venture so far away from the primary goal that you don’t even come back to it. It then becomes an abandoned goal, project, or idea.

One thing that has helped me stay focused is the concept of “just-in-time-learning.” This is learning only about what we need to know right now to take the next step toward our goal.

As an information addict, applying this concept has been very helpful to me!

Success Habit #5: Build Self-Discipline

The fifth essential quality to succeed is self-discipline.

Will Smith said:

“At the center of bringing any dream into fruition is self-discipline. It’s about getting command of your mind to be able to choose actions that are in your own best interest. 99% of people are not willing to do what it takes to make their dreams come true. They are not willing to practice self-discipline.”

American philosopher, Elbert Hubbard, said that “self-discipline is the ability to make yourself do what you should do when you should do it, whether you feel like it or not.”

You can develop self-discipline by consistently performing the necessary actions in your plan, even when you don’t feel like it.

Discipline is like a muscle; the more you practice, the stronger it becomes.

Success Habits

Success Habit #6: Be Perseverant

In his book, The Slight Edge, author Jeff Olson states the one thing that determines if a person will succeed in life or not is what he calls “the slight edge.”

The slight edge is the willingness to do perhaps unremarkable and relatively easy things every day (be consistent) and persevere until we obtain the results we’re seeking.

It also requires having faith that the small activities that are seemingly insignificant at the moment will deliver results over time.

We must not give up even when we don’t see immediate results; we must be patient and keep going.

Most people quit if they don’t see results quickly. By doing so, they automatically lose.

For example, you would probably not lose weight by changing your nutrition and going to the gym only for a couple of weeks and then stopping both altogether, nor will it happen if you do a very intense workout and adopt a strict diet just one day per month.

What will give you results is eating well most days and exercising regularly for a considerable amount of time.

In The Slight Edge, Jeff Olson states that only 5% of the population naturally have this ability.

The rest of us, the other 95% (including myself), must develop it if we want to succeed at anything in life.

To develop “the slight edge,” we must be perseverant. That’s the sixth essential habit to succeed in life.

success tips

I am not someone who “naturally” knows what she wants, plans for it, takes action, stays focused, is disciplined, and perseveres.

My nature is almost the complete opposite.

Because of that, it took me a very long time to build my business and achieve my most important goals of the past ten years.

I wish I had known before what I was doing wrong (or not doing at all!).

The goal of this article is to save you time so that your path to success, whatever that means to you, is shorter than mine.

I hope it can help!

Have a great week.
