10 Simple Habits to Better Yourself in 30 Days

These ten habits have the potential to transform your life in just 30 days. 

It’s human nature to want to grow and evolve, to become better humans and live more fulfilling lives. The desire for growth is embedded deep within us.

Although personal growth is a lifelong process (it never ends!), in this article, I share 10 simple habits that could significantly improve different aspects of yourself and your life in just thirty days.

Let’s begin!

Habit #1: Instead of Watching TV, Try This…

What do you do just after dinner? If you’re like most people, you sit in front of the TV. That is if you’re not already watching TV while eating.

The first habit is to go for a walk just after dinner.

It could be a 15-minute or a 30-minute walk, just as long as you’re getting moving and doing so without straining yourself.

Taking this short walk will help you to digest your food better and allow you to spend some time by yourself or with your partner (if you choose to go walking with company) or perhaps listen to a podcast and learn something useful while you walk.

Habit #2: Wait 3 Seconds

Most of the time, most of us listen with the intent to reply to what’s being said, not to understand what’s being said.

In the book The Charisma Myth, Olivia Fox Cabane recommends waiting a few seconds after someone finishes talking before saying something.

Sometimes, the person isn’t completely done talking. Sometimes, they have more to say, and what usually comes after the pause is more profound and even more important than what was initially stated.

Make a conscious effort to wait a few seconds after someone has finished talking before saying something.

Habit #3: Override the Brain’s Negativity Bias

If you tend to be negative, complain, and see the dark side of situations, know that it’s a habit.

To override this habit and become a more positive person, you must have a gratitude practice.

Keeping a gratitude journal is the number one thing we can do to override the brain’s negative bias.

It’s not just me saying it; it’s science!

You’ve likely heard this so often that it might annoy you to hear it again, but if you tend to be pessimistic, focusing on being grateful is truly the best and simplest thing you can do to change that.

Habit #4: Smile and Connect

Mother Teresa said, “Peace begins with a smile.”

I remember once having a terrible day. I was walking back home after work (a job I utterly disliked) and passed this guy who smiled at me with all his teeth: not a flirty smile, just a genuinely happy smile. It was five years ago, and I still remember it. It changed my mood instantly and made not only my day better but the entire month!

Your smile can change someone’s life.

When you walk on the street, take the subway, or shop at a store, have the courage to look into people’s eyes and smile.

Habit #5: Do the “Wishing-Well” Exercise

If you want to kick your smile to strangers up a notch, practice the “wishing-well” exercise.

I learned about this exercise in the book Tools of Titans by Tim Ferriss. Several times a day, pick two or three strangers you see and secretly (in your mind) wish them to be well: to be happy, healthy, and at peace. Make sure to do it with sincerity.

This exercise is similar to Buddhist Loving-Kindness. If you do this often, you’ll become a more compassionate person.

Habit #6: Become a More Interesting Person

Learn something new every day, whether by listening to a podcast while driving to work, reading a blog post during your afternoon break, or googling a question you have.

Learn about various topics like medicinal plants, crystals, forest survival, or what it’s like to live in Guyana.

If you learn something new every day, you’ll become a much more interesting person.

Habit #7: Prepare Your Mind for What’s Coming Up

In the evening, prepare for the following day. Plan and schedule your tasks, activities, and so on, and try to do so in detail.

Doing this reduces feelings of anxiety because the mind feels more at ease when it knows what to expect.

Habit #8: Visualize How You Would Like to Be

Perhaps the best way to improve yourself is by imagining being the person you want to be.

Visualize a specific scene in your mind and feel the emotions you would feel if you actually were that person. Imagine how it feels to be confident, happy, and successful, for example.

The subconscious mind doesn’t acknowledge the difference between something real and something imagined. When you visualize something with emotions, you implant the belief in your mind that this is who you are and, eventually, you become this person.

Habit #9: Proactively Reduce the Stress in Your Life

The next habit is a stress-management technique.

Once a day or week, take a few minutes to think of the one thing in your life that stresses you the most.

Next, brainstorm ways you could reduce that stress in your life.

Lastly, take a specific action (be proactive) to diminish that stress.

You’ll see that this technique is very empowering!

Habit #10: Give Your Digestive System a Break

Avoid snacking.

For the most part, snacks are filled with salt and sugar, packed with calories, and aren’t very healthy (except maybe a fruit).

It is also best to let your digestive system rest for a few hours in-between meals.

Additionally, since no snacking means fewer calories, it’s one of the most effective ways to lose weight and feel better about your health and body.
