6 Reasons Why Challenges Might Be Your Best Bet to Improve Yourself and Change Your Life (Quickly!)

Do you love to read books and blogs, listen to podcasts, and take courses about ways to better yourself and your life, but often fail to implement what you learn?

Or do you wish you could eat healthier, save more money, exercise regularly, or start a meditation practice, but lack the discipline and perseverance to follow through?

If so, I get you. And I have a solution for you.

I used to be a personal development junkie who struggled with implementing what she learned and seriously lacked self-discipline. Okay, I still am, but not as much as I used to be.

That’s because I discovered a fantastic tool that helps me beat laziness and actually do the things I need to do in order to improve myself and my life: 30-day challenges.

Here’s the thing: we all know that we don’t get fitter by merely watching fitness videos; we have to put on running shoes and sweat.

But between those two activities, there’s a gap, and in that gap, there’s resistance. Challenges help us to push through this resistance.

I’m a big, big fan of challenges, and in this article, I want to make you fall in love with them too.

So, here are six reasons why challenges might be your best bet to improve yourself and your life quickly.

Reason #1: Challenges Are Action-Based

First off, challenges are action-based.

If you’re the type of person that tends to consume a lot of information but rarely act on it, challenges are a great way to force (or push) yourself to implement what you’ve learned. The word “challenge” implies you’ll need to exert some effort and take action.

Reason #2: Kickstart Good Habits or Break Bad Ones

“If your habits don’t line up with your dream, then you need to either change your habits or change your dream.” – John Maxwell

Also, 30-day challenges are an excellent way to kickstart good habits or break bad ones.

For example, I love sugar. I also know it’s not good for me. If I were to decide to not eat sugar anymore (ever), my inner sweets-loving demon would probably panic, go into complete rebellion mode, and likely make me eat twice the sugar I usually eat.

It would be far too drastic of a change for me to handle well.

But if I were to do a 30-day ‘no sugar’ challenge, although it’d be hard, my inner demon wouldn’t panic as much because it’s just for thirty days, not an eternity.

Although thirty days might not be enough time to break a bad habit for good, it gives that initial push, which usually tends to be the hardest part.

The first month is always the toughest part when building a new habit or breaking a bad one. After that first month though, it’s much easier to continue. You can use a challenge to help you push through that more difficult phase of the process.

Reason #3: Develop Self-Discipline

Challenges can also help you build self-discipline.

Will Smith has said:

“At the center of bringing any dream into fruition is self-discipline. It’s getting command of your mind to be able to choose actions that are in your own best interest.”

Self-discipline is about doing what you know you should do to be healthy, happy, and fulfilled in the long-term, whether you feel like it or not in the present moment.

It’s mental strength and, just like a muscle, the more you use it, the stronger it becomes.

The discipline you develop during the challenge– for example, each time you say no to a piece of cake while you’re doing a ‘no sugar’ challenge– stays with you even after the thirty days are over.

It’ll become easier to pass over instant gratifications when they are not aligned with your long-term vision and easier to choose actions that will contribute to your long-term wellbeing instead.

Reason #4: Build Self-Confidence and Self-Trust

Each time you complete a challenge, you’ll feel proud of yourself.

More than that, you will have proven to yourself that you are the type of person who follows through. You’ll build self-trust: trust that you can do what it takes to make your aspirations come true.

You’ll grow to know that you can count on yourself.

Ed Mylett said:

“Self-confidence is the key to transformation, and transformation begins with keeping the promises you make to yourself.”

A challenge is a promise that you make to yourself. So, each time you complete a challenge, you also build self-confidence, which (again) stays with you after the challenge is over.

Reason #5: Reshape Your Identity

In Atomic Habits, James Clear wrote:

“To achieve real and lasting personal transformation, we must go through an identity shift (…) The beliefs you have about yourself can drive your long-term behavior. Maybe you can trick yourself into going to the gym or eating healthy once or twice, but if you don’t shift your underlying identity, then it’s hard to stick with long-term changes.”

To shift your identity– how you perceive yourself– you must change your habitual behaviors (“habits”).

That’s because your habits reinforce your beliefs. It’s like a loop: your self-beliefs make you behave in a certain way, and then your behavior reinforces your identity.

If the loop isn’t helpful (i.e., if it doesn’t lead to living a healthy, happy, and fulfilling life), you must break it and create a new one. The easiest way to do that is by changing your repeated behaviors or habits.

In my opinion, 30-day challenges are one of the best ways to reshape your identity.

Let’s pretend that you want to live a healthier lifestyle. If you did a 30-day green smoothie challenge, followed by a 30-day ‘no sugar’ challenge, followed by a 30-day fitness challenge, after those three months, you would begin to not only be healthier (because of all the green smoothies you drank), but you’d also start to perceive yourself as a healthy person.

It’ll then be more natural for you to make healthy choices because, as we’ve said, your behaviors reflect your beliefs.

Reason #6: Challenges Are Fun and Motivating

Challenges are fun!

If you’re competitive, you’ll probably feel motivated and even excited about the idea of doing a challenge. But even if you are not competitive at all (I’m not!), there is something intriguing when it comes to challenges.

For some of us, we can’t help but wonder, “Will I succeed? Will I make it through the thirty days?” This curiosity can give you a boost of motivation that’s very helpful and can make all the difference in kickstarting new habits or breaking bad ones.
