8 Steps to Improve Yourself Using 30-Day Challenges - Conscious Originals

How to Use 30-Day Challenges to Improve Yourself and Your Life

The other day, I posted an article about why challenges are, in my opinion, the best way to improve yourself and do so quickly.

Simply put, challenges are a complete personal growth practice. They involve setting a goal, planning, developing the right mindset, and practicing self-awareness.

You not only benefit from the results you gain from the actual challenge (ex: saving money if you did a 30-day no-spend challenge or losing weight if you did a 30-day green smoothie challenge), but you also build self-discipline and self-confidence along the way.

However, challenges can be… well, challenging.

To ensure that you succeed and achieve the results you are seeking, I’ve provided below an 8-step formula that I recommend following when doing one of these challenges.

I use this formula each time I do a challenge, and it helps me to persevere and not quit when I’m right in the middle of reaching my goals!

Mindful Morning Routine

Step 1: Define Your Desired Outcome (Goal)

Before you choose a challenge, it’s a good idea to reflect upon what you want to achieve or improve about yourself or your life: what’s your goal?

It could be that you want to lose ten pounds this year, that you want to kickstart a healthier lifestyle, or that you want to save $2,000 in the next three months.

Step 2: Know Your “Why”

Next, write down why that goal is important to you: why do you want to save money or lose weight or be healthier?

Although challenges are kind of fun, they can also be difficult. Going without sugar for thirty days will likely be hard if you usually eat dessert after every meal. It’s important to know your “why” because it’ll be your motivator at times when you feel like quitting.

Step 3: Choose the Right Challenge

Once you know your goal and why it’s important to you, choose a challenge that will help you achieve your goal or move in the direction of your goal.

For example, if one of your personal goals is to lose weight, consider doing a 30-day green smoothie or an intermittent fasting challenge.

If your main goal is to build self-discipline, then any challenge should work as a great starting point.

Step 4: Decide on a Starting Date

Next, look at your planner and decide on a starting date. Make sure the timing is right. For example, doing a water-fast during the holidays may not be ideal.

Once you’ve decided, mark the starting date in your planner.

Step 5: Get Informed

Suppose you want to do an intermittent-fasting challenge: take the time to research and learn about intermittent fasting first. Learn about the health benefits, different methods to practice intermittent fasting, and so on.

If you decide to do a minimalist living challenge, perhaps you could watch the documentary The Minimalists on Netflix or a few YouTube videos about decluttering.

When I did my first 3-day, dry-fast challenge (I’m not recommending trying it!), it was so hard, and I felt miserable.

I wanted to quit every single minute of it.

On the third day, I watched a few YouTube videos of people sharing their experience as they themselves were doing a dry-fast, and it was so helpful! I thought, “If they can do it, I can too!” I also re-watched a couple of videos about the health benefits of doing a dry-fast to keep me motivated.

Step 6: Put Systems in Place

Before the official starting date, make sure to have systems in place to support you throughout the duration of the challenge you’ve selected.

For example, if you do a 30-day ‘no sugar’ challenge, make sure there are no cookies or chocolate bars hidden away in your pantry.

It might also be a good idea for you to find an accountability partner whom you report to every day or every week that helps keep you motivated and staying on track.

I also recommend having a journal and writing in it each time the challenge gets difficult (ex: when you have a sugar craving) and you feel like giving up.

Step 7: Pick a Reward

Of course, if you’re working hard to complete a challenge, you need a reward for reaching the finish line!

Think of a small gift you can reward yourself with once you’ve completed the challenge. It doesn’t have to be big; anything that will keep you motivated will do just fine.

Is there a nice shirt that you saw at the store but didn’t purchase yet, or have you been dreaming of getting a foot massage lately?

Personally, when I want to buy something that I may not necessarily need, I write it down on my “buys list” and wait. I started doing this to avoid making impulsive purchases and reduce my spending.

Often, I’ll use one of the items on my list as a reward for when I complete a challenge. 

Step 8: Track Your Progress 

Tracking your progress is also incredibly helpful.

I find that putting an ‘X’ on my calendar or tracking app each day I succeed during a challenge is very satisfying! It motivates me to continue on and helps me stay aware of how well (or not so well) I’ve done so far.

You could use a habit tracking app or something as simple as a magnetic board on your fridge.
