These three journal prompts will help you live a more meaningful and purposeful life. 

Today, I want to share one of the most transformative personal growth practices that I’ve tried so far.

The practice is a journaling exercise containing three questions (prompts).

Asking and answering these questions will help you feel a greater sense of purpose and generally more satisfied with your life. It’ll also ensure that you make the most of the time you have on this planet and avoid having regrets in the future.

I’m excited to share this simple practice with you because I believe it has the potential to change your life. It has certainly changed mine.

Morning Journal Prompts

Journal Prompt #1

The first question is:

If your time on this planet, in this life, came to an end right now, what would you regret not having done, experienced, accomplished, and become?

I asked myself this question for the first time a few years ago.

At that time, I felt that I had done pretty much all I wanted: I had traveled, gone scuba diving, gone to university, had many fun experiences and happy memories. And though I didn’t want to die right then, I thought that I wouldn’t have any regrets if I did.

But after I thought about it for another minute, I realized that there’s one thing I would regret: not having attained a higher level of consciousness. Then, I thought, “Hmm! Perhaps I should work on that…”

For you, the answer to that question may be completely different.

Perhaps you would regret not traveling or not spending more time with your family, or not telling your partner how much you love them. Maybe you would regret working a job you dislike instead of pursuing a career as a writer, dancer, or astronaut.

But here’s what asking yourself this question will do: it’ll help shift your focus away from the priorities of the ego and onto the priorities of your higher self (or wiser self, if you prefer).

The ego likes to feel important. The ego thinks that we need to look a certain way or achieve certain things to be worthy – which, of course, isn’t true. 

Your higher self wants much more for you than losing weight or getting a new iPhone or a raise. It wants you to feel at peace, fulfilled, and loved.

Here’s the thing: you can’t find lasting happiness by satisfying the desires of the ego. You can only be truly happy when focusing on the desires of your higher self, and that’s what the first question will help you discover.

Journal Prompt #2

The second question brings a slightly different perspective. It’ll help you come up with practical actions.

If you knew you had only six months to live (now you’re giving yourself a little more time!), how would you use the time you have left?

You may also add:

What would you change about your life? What would you prioritize and focus on for the next six months?

Here are a few answers I wrote in my journal this morning (to “raise my consciousness”):

✦ I would do the lessons in the text, A Course in Miracles, diligently every day.

✦ I would do my best to change my perception of my body. For as long as I can remember, I have dealt with body image issues. Of course, I know that a person’s worth isn’t defined by how they look, but I still feel discomfort and shame when I think of my body: that means that there are beliefs in my mind that need to be shifted. And if I had only six months to live, I would make a greater effort to change those beliefs.

✦ I would change the habits (consumption, food, etc.) that aren’t beneficial to me, others, and the planet.

Journal Prompt #3

Finally, the third and last question is:

How can you make the most of the time you have today?

The answer to that question will be based on the answers to the previous questions.

For example, I wrote in my journal:

✦ Today, I will spend 30 minutes reading the text, A Course in Miracles and doing the daily lesson in the workbook.

✦ Today, I will meditate for at least 60 minutes.

✦ Today, I will do my best not to judge people for their opinions, words, and actions. I will remind myself that we all have a unique perspective on life and that mine isn’t better or worse than anyone else’s.

Morning Journal Prompts

By asking ourselves these three questions daily, we can speed up our personal and spiritual growth and our overall evolution as human beings.

And by spending our precious time focusing on the things that really matter, we can reduce the chances that we’ll have regrets in the future.
