10-Step Personal Development Plan for Personal Transformation

Personal Development Plan

Hey, I'm Emilie!

A certified life coach, meditation instructor, and spiritual entrepreneur. I’m here to help you create a vibrant life around your higher purpose and heart’s desires.

A Step-by-Step Personal Development Plan Template

In this article, I share one of the most effective methods I know to achieve personal transformation in all major areas of your life.

It’s a 10-step personal development plan.

I used to be allergic to the word “planning” until I understood that my lack of it was preventing me from achieving my goals.

Drifting is not a growth strategy but a sure way to get stuck and feel dissatisfied.

I know from experience!

Here’s the thing: dreamers don’t have to be drifters. You can have big dreams and aspirations and achieve them.

And that’s what a personal development plan can help you do.

Before we begin, let’s clarify what exactly a “personal development plan” is.

Brian Tracy, a brilliant and very successful entrepreneur, says:

“Personal Development is the process of improving oneself through conscious habits and activities. It is the pursuit of personal growth to enhance the quality of life and achieve one’s dreams and aspirations.”

As for “plan,” Cambridge Dictionary defines it as “a set of decisions about how to do something in the future.”

So, basically, a personal development plan is a set of decisions and actions to improve yourself and the quality of your life, starting now and moving forward.

It’s the bridge between having aspirations and making them come true.

Step 1: Pick an Area of Your Life

First, pick the area of your life that is most important to you right now.

For example, it could be your health and fitness, a love relationship, finances, or career.

Step 2: Assess Your Current Situation

Next, assess your current level of satisfaction in the key area you’ve chosen to begin with.

Simply rate this area of your life on a scale of 0 to 10, with 10 representing the ideal scenario.

Note that what you are measuring is your level of satisfaction with this area, not what meets the definition of success based on societal norms.

Personal Development Plan

Step 3: What Is Not Ideal?

Then, write down the reasons why this area of your life is not a 10 out of 10.

For example, in the area of “Finances,” someone could have written:

  • I still have half of my student loan to repay.
  • I don’t have any savings, and it gives me anxiety.
  • I don’t know where my money goes; there’s never anything left at the end of the month.
  • I am always struggling to pay my bills and credit card payments.
  • I wish I could have a better salary– get a raise or find a better paying job.

Just list everything you can think of that’s not ideal in this key area: all the things that prevent you from feeling at level “10” in this area.

Step 4: What Would Be the Ideal Scenario (10/10)?

Now, think of and describe the ideal scenario in this area of your life.

List all the things that would make this area a 10/10.

After doing steps 3 and 4, you should have a pretty good idea of the gap between your current situation and the ideal scenario.

Personal Development Example

Step 5: What Is the Biggest Impact Item?

Next, find your “80/20” or “biggest impact item.”

According to the 80/20 rule, or the Pareto principle, roughly 80% of any result (in this case, the achievement of the ideal scenario) comes from 20% of the inputs (for example, the actions you take).

So, your biggest impact item represents 20% of all the actions you can take or changes you can make that will account for 80% of the achievement of the ideal scenario in this area of your life.

Look at what you wrote in steps 3 and 4 and identify the one thing that, if you changed or implemented or stopped doing, would help you achieve your ideal scenario faster; this is what I call your “biggest impact item.”

For example, in the “Finances” category, your biggest impact item could be that you don’t have any savings, and it causes you anxiety.

You, therefore, need to build an emergency fund so that you can feel safer. Then, for the next few months, you would focus on saving for an emergency fund.

If you try to change too many things at once, you risk getting discouraged and giving up; we don’t want that! It’s best to focus on one thing at a time.

Personal Growth Plan

Step 6: Set an Outcome Goal

Create an outcome goal with your biggest impact item. Try to be as specific as you can.

For example, “I will save $5,000 for an emergency fund by July 1st.”

In some areas, like finances or health and fitness, it’s quite easy to set measurable and timely goals. But in other circumstances, outcome goals can’t really be measurable.

How would you measure the quality of your social life or your romantic relationship?

In those cases, your goal could simply be to have a loving relationship with your partner, with no or few arguments, or to have a vibrant group of friends whom you see weekly.

Step 7: Set Your System Goals

Now we’re going to get more practical. Look at your outcome goal and define the actions you must take consistently to achieve it.

Those are your system goals, and, over time, they will become your habits.

Here’s an example:

  • Biggest impact item in the “finances” category: Having no savings.
  • Outcome goal: Save $5,000 by July 1st for an emergency fund.
  • System goal: Have 20% of your income automatically transferred each paycheck into a savings account.

You could also have more than one system goal (recurrent action). Here’s another example:

  • Biggest impact item in the “love” category: I am single and would like to have a partner.
  • Outcome goal: Be in a fulfilling and committed romantic relationship.
  • System goals:
    • Write a message to two potential dates through the dating app every week.
    • Go on a date every week.
    • Attend a networking event every month.
How to Change Your Life

Step 8: Define the Micro-Actions

Next, define the micro-actions you need to take in order to achieve your goal.

Be specific enough that you know precisely what you will do and how you will do it.

Let’s continue with the example of finding a romantic partner.

Some micro-actions could be:

  • Ask for recommendations for a dating app (or do a Google search).
  • Create an account and profile on a dating app.
  • Start looking at other people’s profiles.
  • Message one person.

These are the specific actions you must take to achieve your goal and begin to bridge the gap between your current situation and your ideal scenario in the “love relationship” category.

Step 9: Schedule the Micro-Actions

Open your planner and schedule your micro-actions.

What will you do this month? This week? Tomorrow?

As an example, this month, you could go on two dates. This week, you could message four potential dates through the app. Tomorrow, you could create an account and fill in your profile on the dating app you’ve chosen.

Personal Growth tips

Step 10: Track Your Progress

Make sure to track your system goals.

This can easily be done by using a habit tracker. You can also use a notebook or an app on your phone.

Regardless of how you decide to go about doing it, you absolutely must track your actions!

Otherwise, it’ll be difficult to keep track of whether you are consistently doing what you’re supposed to be doing in order to achieve your goal.

I hope this information for a development plan helps! If you tend to have difficulty following through and being disciplined and perseverant (like me), I believe having a plan is the best thing we can do to make our aspirations become a reality.

I also recommend reading this article about success habits. It covers the mindset required to achieve our goals, and I think it complements this article very well.

Have a beautiful week! ♡

Emilie
