Personal Growth Goals to Have

Hey, I'm Emilie!

10 Personal Development Goal Ideas

Personal growth is probably my favorite topic in the world, so I’m genuinely delighted to write this article about ten personal development goal ideas to make ourselves and our lives better this year.

Before I get started, I have a little gift for you. It’s a nice gift – a personal development and lifestyle design plan that will help you:

  • Define what you want in all major areas of your life
  • Set clear goals
  • Determine the fastest path with the exact steps you must take to achieve your goals and your big vision for yourself and your life.

I think it’s one of the best free products I have ever offered. You can grab your copy here.

With that being said, let’s dive right in with the ten personal growth goal ideas.

And enjoy a little “vacation” from the turmoil in your mind.

1. Listen to Will Smith

Will Smith said:

“At the center of bringing any dream into fruition is self-discipline … 99% of people are not willing to do what it takes to make their dreams come true. They are not willing to practice self-discipline.”

A great personal growth goal to have on our list is to develop self-discipline.

Some people naturally have more of it than others. I’m not one of those people. Self-discipline (ex: waking up early) and self-control (ex: not eating the second piece of cake) are two things I struggle with a lot.

Luckily, I’ve found a fun way to build self-discipline that works like a charm: monthly challenges.

I write a lot about challenges on this blog, and for a good reason: they are wonderful! Challenges push us outside of our comfort zones and help us build self-discipline and good habits (or break bad ones).

I’m a big, big fan!

If you want to try it for yourself, you can join our free 30-day self and life improvement challenge. It’s a very helpful and consistent way to improve yourself and your life in just a few minutes per day.

2. Conquer Your Fears (At Least in Your Mind)

Another noble personal growth goal to have is to conquer your fears.

Here’s something I’ve been doing for the past couple of years that you could try:

First, list all your fears, the big ones and the tiny ones (the ones that make you uncomfortable but wouldn’t make you faint).

Then, place them in order from the least scary to the scariest, and commit to overcoming one per month (or one per week, if you’re very courageous).

When a fear is intense, you can practice overcoming it in your mind first. The subconscious mind doesn’t differentiate between something real and something that you vividly imagine, so if you visualize yourself overcoming your fear, you’ll trick your mind into believing that it’s safe to do the thing that scares you because you’ll have successfully done it in the past (although only in your mind).

3. Improve Your Time Management

Do you feel like there are never enough hours in a day to do all the things you would like to do? Or is it just me?

Since everyone is blessed with the same number of hours in a day – you, me, Oprah, and everyone else – if we continuously fight for minutes, it’s a sign that we have a time management problem. I know I do.

If you do too, there’s an excellent, practical, and easy-to-read book that I highly recommend reading to improve your time management: Eat That Frog by Brian Tracy.

4. Forgive Yourself and Others

The graph below comes from David R. Hawkins’ book, Power Versus Force. It represents the vibrational frequency (energy) of different states and emotions.

Personal Growth Goal Ideas

As you can see, guilt and shame are the lowest-vibe emotions. Anger is not too far from guilt. So, when we hold onto guilt and resentment for a long time, we lower our vibe. A low vibe means low energy, which is unhealthy.

It’s okay to feel bad when we know we hurt someone, but you can also say you are sorry, commit to doing better next time, and move on. It’s also okay to be angry at someone who hurt you, but wanting revenge won’t make you feel better in the end.

Forgiveness isn’t saying that what was done was acceptable, but to let go of the need to punish whoever has wronged you and let go of the desire for revenge, which can be very freeing.

5. Build Resilience and Become Unshakeable

Cambridge Dictionary defines resilience as “the quality of being able to return quickly to a previous good condition after problems.”

It’s how you can bounce back on your feet after experiencing a difficulty, like losing your job or going through a breakup.

One of the best ways to build resilience is meditation.

That’s because, during meditation, you practice dissociating from your thought and emotions. You still experience them, but you’re not overwhelmed by them. When you meditate regularly, you also learn to access the part of you (the real you) that is always calm and still, whatever happens on the outside.

If you’re new to meditation, I have a free 10-minute class on the easiest and most popular meditation technique.

6. Improve Your People Skills

Improving our people skills is an asset that will continue to be valuable in the near and far future, making it a great personal growth goal!

I think that the best way to go about this is to:

  • First, learn about social skills by reading books like How to Win Friends and Influence People, The Charisma Myth, Nonviolent Communication, and People Skills by Robert Bolton.
  • Then, practice those skills in real life.

7. Overcome Your Limiting Beliefs

Limiting beliefs are simply beliefs that you have about yourself or the world in general that limit your growth, potential, success, and happiness.

They are like an invisible glass ceiling that keeps you stuck and feeling small. They also make you sabotage your own progress.

Steven Pressfield, the author of The War of Art, calls it “Resistance with a capital R.” He says:

“You will NEVER, NEVER achieve your dreams until you learn to recognize, confront, and overcome that voice in your head that is your own Resistance.”

How do we overcome this inner resistance (our limiting beliefs)?

A method you can look into to help you do this is “The Work” by Byron Katie. (All the information is free on her website.) Another good idea is to hire a coach. Our limiting beliefs are usually invisible to us, and a coach can help you become aware of them.

However, the best way I know to overcome limiting beliefs is, again, visualization. If there’s a goal you’ve been working toward for a long time and don’t see much progress, it could be because of the limiting beliefs in your mind. In that case, it would be a good idea to visualize yourself achieving that goal.

By doing so, you’ll trick your mind into believing that it’s possible to achieve it, and the limiting beliefs that prevent you from making progress will eventually dissipate.

8. Pick a Theme and Dive Deep into It

The next personal growth goal idea is to pick a theme or topic that you’ll explore in-depth for the next four, six, or even twelve months.

For example, you could focus on learning about productivity. Or explore minimalism. Or nutrition. You can simply make a list of things you know will improve the quality of your life.

Pick one and commit to learning as much as you can about this topic for the next few months.

9. Incorporate Mindfulness Practices into Your Daily Life

We have all heard of the benefits of mindfulness to reduce stress and live happier and healthier lives.

Mindfulness practices are also a great way to develop greater self-awareness, which is essential for growing and evolving as human beings.

I personally recommend taking a course called Mindfulness Stress-Based Reduction. If you were to take the course in person, it would probably be expensive, but there’s a free version of that course also available that is excellent. It’s an 8-week self-paced program that will teach you about mindfulness and how you can incorporate it into your daily life.

I loved this course and took it twice!

10. Stop Wanting to Be Right

I have so many personal growth goal ideas that I struggled choosing the tenth, but I had to pick a last one. Otherwise, this article would have been too long!

The last personal growth goal on this list is to let go of the need to be right.

I heard Wayne Dyer say in a conference years ago, “Do you want peace, or do you want to be right?” I think it’s human nature to want to be right, to defend our beliefs (what we believe to be true), and want to prove that we are right, often at the expense of our relationships.

It’s the ego that wants to be right.

I think it’s essential, especially right now, to practice non-judgment and acknowledge that, whatever the situation, we could be wrong. It’s important to understand that, in the end, every person is right based on their perspective of the situation.

So, why argue?

Given the current circumstances, we have plenty of opportunities to practice letting go of the need to be right and respecting people who have different beliefs and viewpoints.

It’s not always easy, and it demands a great deal of self-awareness, but it’s perhaps one of the best personal growth practices we can adopt.
